Removing tree guards.
22 & 24 February 2012. 10am to approx. 2.30pm. Meet at Llangoed car park.
We are looking for volunteers to help with practical conservation work by removing tree guards from newly planted areas. This is a great opportunity to get out and about, keep fit and active, meet new people and have fun, as well as making a valuable contribution to the conservation and enhancement of the area. If you would like to help, meet us at Llangoed car park (near the bridge) at 10am. Wear appropriate footwear and bring waterproofs. All under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Two More Red Squirrel Sightings!
October 2011.
A red squirrel was seen in the woodland on 12 September, and another (possibly the same animal) on 4 October! These regular sightings are great news!
At this time of year, red squirrels tend to be most active during the 3-4 hours after dawn and 2-3 hours before dusk. They are less active in winter, usually having a peak of activity in the morning.

The Reds have Arrived!
August 2011.
Last year, we got quite excited when squirrel feeding signs were found at Aberlleiniog.
There is a good population of red squirrels at nearby Henllys Hall, and at Wern y Wylan in Llanddona, and it was possible that the squirrels had dispersed from there and found their way to Aberlleiniog. It was impossible to tell, however, whether the signs had been left by red or grey squirrels, as their feeding signs are very similar, and we had no other field signs to help fill in the gaps. We needed more evidence that reds had visited the area. Well, now we have just that! We were delighted to be contacted by a spokesperson for the Anglesey Red Squirrel Project who reported that some visitors to the area had been in touch to say that they had watched a red squirrel scampering around and playing in the woods at Aberlleiniog! This was the first recorded sighting of a red squirrel in this area, and, we hope, the first of many! |

Volunteers help to free the trees!
A group of local volunteers recently leant a hand to remove tree guards from young trees at Aberlleiniog. Many thanks to everyone that helped out!
The guards were put on when the trees were planted about 5 years ago. They protected them from rabbits, voles and mice, and encouraged them to grow by acting as mini-greenhouses. It is now time to remove the guards, as the trees are no longer threatened by browsers, and are continuing their rapid growth. |

Additional sessions to remove the remaining guards will be arranged. If you are interested to help out, look out for details on this website, in the local press, and on posters around Llangoed.
New Benches & Signs
Some new benches and information signs have been installed at the castle.

The benches are made from Aberlleiniog oak, and were constructed by a local timber workshop.
The signs provide information on the history, archaeology and wildlife of the site. They are housed within frames of Aberlleiniog oak.
